Negotiating Your Sales Offer in 2026: OTE Isn't the Headline

Quota, ramp credit, accelerators, and territory matter more than base. A guide to the variables that actually move your year-one earnings.

Candidates over-index on base salary because it's the easiest number to compare. But in a sales role the variables that drive year-one earnings are quota, ramp credit, accelerators, and the territory you inherit.

Before you counter on base, ask: what's the quota, what's the historical attainment of reps on this team, what ramp credit do I get in Q1 and Q2, where do accelerators kick in, and what accounts come with the patch? A $20k base bump is meaningless if the quota is set 30% above what anyone has hit.

Always negotiate ramp explicitly. Two quarters of 100% ramp credit on a $1M quota is worth more than most base counters, and most companies will grant it because it doesn't touch the comp band.
